Welcome to the new group of fourth graders and their families. I'm glad you found our class website I hope it will be a helpful resource for you this year. In this "News" section I will attempt to post classroom newsletters. If I can't figure that out, I will at least use this area to write news, announcements, or homework help this is too long for the twitter-homework page.
I'm looking forward to a great year of learning together! A couple of important reminders:
1. The end of the year NWEA testing will begin April 21. We will take the same three tests that we did a the beginning of the year to see how much students have grown this year. While the test is not a perfect way to know for sure, it is a good indicator. Test Taking Strategies: 1. Be well rested 2. Eat a healthy breakfast, have a healthy snack 3. Be positive and confident that you are ready for the test 4. Read the entire question 5. Read (and evaluate) all of the choices before answering 6. Double check your answer before moving on 2. The end of year and final report cards are also coming up. Be sure to keep up with homework and schoolwork all way to June and our final days of school. There are some fun things planned, but we are still trying to catch up the lost time from so many snow days. My goal is to have the class prepared for success in fifth grade. That means we will have to keep learning and working right up to the last minute this year! Multiplying a fraction by a whole number:
1. multiply the numerator by the whole number 2. keep the denominator the same 3. simply your answer (Can the fraction be reduced? If the fraction is improper, make a mixed number.) Adding fractions with unlike denominators: 1. find the lowest common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators 2. change the fractions into equivalent versions that will have matching denominators (LCM) for example: 1/3 and 1/5 would become 5/15 and 3/15 1/3 = 5/15 1/5 = 3/15 3. add the fractions (which now have matching denominators) 4. simply your answer (Can the fraction be reduced? If the fraction is improper, make a mixed number.) After just one week, I am really excited for this year! We have an excellent group of scholars in fourth grade. We have been working on getting into some good routines and figuring out the procedures that will help us get through each day successfully.
Next week we will really start to dive into the curriculum. We will be starting a new ELA program (Reading Street) which will include looking at the story "Because of Winn-Dixie." We will also be reviewing some third grade math, re-sharpening writing skills, and introducing the science and social studies objectives for first quarter. It is going to be a busy week. Scholars will need to make sure they come to school well-rested and ready to learn! Here's to a great year: Woo-Hoo!! |
