Learning happens when parents, students, and teachers are all working towards the same goal.
Parents:
Accountability I remember the president's opening words as I started at a particular University. He basically said that going to school (after high school) is paying someone to make you do something you think you should do. Fourth graders might not realize they want to learn something in school, so they need someone to encourage them to do their best. Help with homework In fourth grade, homework is really a commitment for both the students and the parents. Please, schedule time into each day to check up on your fourth grader. Reading Studies show that the biggest difference-maker in the process of education is reading. Encourage your fourth grader to read, read with your fourth grader, and talk to your fourth grader about books. You will be amazed at the results! |
Students:
Effort Students, this is your education. I'm reminded of a parable about a carpenter who was finishing his last house. He was kind of tired and looking forward to retiring, so he cut corners and did not do his best. When he finished, he was surprised to find that this final project would be a gift...for him! You are building your own education, so go ahead and do your best. Homework Plan on 30 to 45 minutes of homework each night. That means, pick a time of the day that you will work for you (for example right after school, or right after supper). If you do not have enough homework from school to fill that amount of time, then read a book, work on flashcards, or write a story. Read You might not like reading, yet. You might not feel like a good reader, yet. You need to read. The more you read, the more you know. The more you know, the more you grow. |
Teacher:
Lessons I will strive to provide you with engaging and useful lessons. Sometimes, we will watch a video or play a game on the computer. Other times, we will read and discuss an important or interesting topic. Encouragement I really do want students to do their best. I will strive to look for the good things that students are doing, and tell them about it. I will also provide rewards for students who work hard and display our moral focus virtues. Communication First and foremost, I will be available. If parents or students have any questions, let me know. I will make time to talk with you or write you a note or e-mail. I will also work to keep up regular communication the classroom blog. This year is going to be a team effort, so we definitely need to keep in touch! |
